How the role is built
COMPONENT 1

In-Person Activities

One full PBL day at your assigned site, leading youth through hands-on project-based learning. Now mandated by NYC — we're shooting for 6 hours at each site.

COMPONENT 2

Online Check-Ins

One 1-hour live Google Meet session in a Morning, Mid-Day, or Evening window. Attendance, progress check, troubleshooting.

COMPONENT 3

Independent Work Monitoring

Asynchronous time reviewing youth submissions, giving written feedback, tracking attendance.

While we wish in a perfect world the entire team could make this transition, we understand that this is not possible. In an effort to retain as many people as possible, we're trying to find a way through that makes logistical and monetary sense for us all.

Can you work in-person at one of our four sites?

We have sites in Brooklyn, Staten Island, and the Bronx. If you can't travel to any of them, that's fine — we'll route you through the online-only flow and won't waste your time on the in-person screens.

Step 2 — In-Person Sites

Which location(s) can you commit to?

This is the most important question, so we're asking it first. Most candidates commit to one site, one day a week. The only way to commit to two in-person days is to pick CSI (Tuesday) and one Wednesday site — the four sites only run on those two days, and the three Wednesday sites overlap so you can't do more than one.

Step 6 — The Position

PBL Instructor — the basics.

Project Based Learning Instructor for the Summer Youth Employment Program. Part-time, non-exempt. You'll deliver curriculum to youth ages 14–15.

Pay rates

You're paid by the hour, and the rate depends on which kind of work you're doing. Bilingual instructors get the bilingual differential.

Week 7 is administrative closeout — everyone is paid a flat 10 hours for that week regardless of the schedule you picked during the program weeks.

When can you run online sessions?

Pick every window that works for you. Each online check-in is one hour, scheduled by the Program Director within the windows you've selected.

Step 5 — What's expected

Qualifications & responsibilities.

Before you decide, make sure these line up with your experience and what you're willing to commit to.

Minimum qualifications
  • Minimum 3 years teaching experience (virtual teaching preferred).
  • Background in education, social sciences, human services, or related field.
  • At least 2 years counseling at-promise youth or related populations.
  • Must pass a background check (details a couple screens ahead).
What you'll bring
  • Experience unpacking and delivering new curriculum.
  • Expertise in online learning and Google Classroom.
  • In-depth knowledge of youth development and career pathways.
  • Outstanding group and individual counseling skills.
Your day-to-day responsibilities
  • Plan and coordinate daily program activities to engage youth.
  • Deliver pre-packaged activities based on NYCID curriculum.
  • Provide counseling and advocacy to support and motivate participants.
  • Track and monitor youth attendance and task completion.
  • Meet with Program Director and Coordinator to keep the program running smoothly.
  • Communicate directly with NYCID Senior Managers.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings when needed.
Step 7 — One thing to know

Fingerprinting & background check.

This is required for the role. Here's how it works and what it costs you upfront.

NYC DOE fingerprinting through PETS

All candidates must be fingerprinted by the NYC Department of Education through the PETS system before starting.

  • Upfront cost to you: $112 – $125 for processing (range based on current NYC DOE rates).
  • You are reimbursed for this expense once you are officially hired.
  • NYCID staff walk you through the PETS appointment booking.
Other things to know
  • This is a 6-week program plus 1 week of administrative closeout — 7 weeks total (July 13 – Aug 28, 2026).
  • Bilingual Spanish/English is a plus.
